"Nothing trains and teaches so powerfully as love. Love attracts. It does not coerce. If the aim of parents is to teach their children to love God they must show their love for Him by loving each other and loving the children."

Elisabth Elliot

motherhood

Motherhood is one of the most important things I have ever done. Not because I did it perfectly — I did not — but because God used it to shape me more than almost anything else. These are the books that have helped me think about that calling with wisdom and grace.

Spiritual Mothering — Susan Hunt

Susan Hunt writes about what it means for older women to pour into younger ones — not just as a program but as a way of life. This is Titus 2 lived out on the page. If you want to understand what it looks like to be a woman who invests in the next generation, this is where I would start. It has shaped how I think about mentoring more than almost any other book.

Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit — Teri Maxwell

This is not just a book about homeschooling. It is a book about the heart of the woman doing the homeschooling. Teri Maxwell gets underneath the curriculum and the schedules and asks what is really going on inside you as you teach your children. I found it deeply convicting and deeply encouraging at the same time. Even if you do not homeschool, the heart work in this book applies.

Missional Motherhood — Gloria Furman

Gloria Furman reframes everything about motherhood in the best possible way. This is not a book about doing more or being better. It is a book about understanding that the everyday, ordinary work of mothering is caught up in something eternally significant. Furman connects the mundane moments of motherhood to the grand story of redemption and it will change how you see the dishes and the discipline and the thousand small things that make up your days. A book I wish I had read much earlier.

Risen Motherhood — Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler

This book does something I have not seen many motherhood books do — it consistently brings you back to the gospel as the foundation for every parenting decision and every hard moment. Jensen and Wifler are honest about the complexity of modern motherhood and they do not offer easy answers. What they offer instead is something better. A framework rooted in the resurrection that actually holds. Practical, gospel-centered, and very readable.

Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood — Melissa Kruger

Motherhood is busy. Anyone who has lived it knows that. But Melissa Kruger makes the case that one thing can shape every moment of it — time in the Word with Jesus. This eleven week Bible study walks you through what Scripture actually says about the calling of motherhood and helps you pursue it from a place of genuine relationship with God.  If you want to go deeper in your faith and in your mothering at the same time, this is a beautiful place to do both. A good one to do alone or with a group of mothers walking the same season.

Mom Guilt: Escaping the Strong Hold

Most mothers know this feeling. The constant sense that you are missing the mark. That everyone else has it more together than you do. That you are somehow failing the children God gave you. Lauren Whitman names that feeling honestly and then does something more helpful than just offering encouragement — she helps you understand where it is coming from. As a counselor she brings a biblical framework to the roots of mom guilt and shows you what it looks like to accept your limitations, reject the standards the world has set for you, and live freely before God instead. This is not a book that tells you to try harder. It is a book that reminds you that God sees more than your failures — and He wants you to see it too.

Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full — Gloria Furman

Gloria Furman understands what it is to be a busy mother who loves Jesus and still finds it hard to stay connected to Him in the middle of everything. This book is for that woman. Short, rich, and full of gospel truth that speaks directly into the ordinary chaos of motherhood. I have recommended it to young mothers more times than I can count. It is the kind of book you can read in small pieces and still come away nourished.

Grounded in Grace — Jonathan Holmes

Jonathan Holmes writes about grace not as a concept to understand but as a foundation to actually live from. This book helped me think more clearly about what it looks like to counsel and disciple women from a place of settled confidence in what God has already done rather than what we still need to accomplish. Warm, practical, and deeply rooted in Scripture. A good one for anyone who walks alongside others or simply wants to understand grace more fully in their own life.

Childproof: Parenting by Faith Not Formula — Julie Lowe

Julie Lowe writes with the wisdom of someone who has sat with struggling parents and struggling children and knows what actually helps. This is not a parenting formula. It is an invitation to parent from a place of faith — trusting God with the children He has given you even when you do not know what to do next. Honest about the limits of every method and consistent in pointing back to the One who is not limited at all. A refreshing and grounding read.

God Is Still Good — Katie Faris

Katie Faris writes as a mother of five who knows firsthand that motherhood does not always look the way you imagined it would. This book is for the woman whose experience of raising children has included real pain — a hard diagnosis, an unexpected challenge, a season that has felt more like grief than joy. Faris does not minimize any of it. She validates the sorrow, gives you permission to grieve, and then points you steadily back to the God who is still good in the middle of all of it. Honest, warm, and grounded in Scripture throughout. A good one for individual study or a small group of mothers walking hard seasons together.

LONGING FOR MOTHERHOOD

Not every woman who longs to be a mother holds a child in her arms. Whether you are walking through infertility, waiting, or learning to surrender a dream you have carried for a long time, these books are for you. They will not tell you what to feel or promise you an outcome. What they will do is point you to a God who sees you, knows you, and has not forgotten you.

Longing for Motherhood: Holding On to Hope in the Midst of Childlessness — Chelsea Patterson Sobolik

Chelsea Sobolik writes from her own experience of childlessness with honesty, grace, and a deep trust in the goodness of God. This is not a book that tells you everything will work out the way you hope. It is a book about learning to hope in God Himself when the thing you want most has not come. Tender, biblical, and deeply needed. If you are walking this road or love someone who is, this book matters.

MOTHERHOOD AND LOSS

Some seasons of motherhood are marked by grief. The loss of a child, a pregnancy, or the dream of motherhood itself is one of the deepest sorrows a woman can carry. These books do not offer easy comfort or tidy answers. What they offer is the truth of a God who is present in the darkest places and the witness of women who have found Him faithful there. If you are in this kind of season, you are not alone and you are not forgotten.

Held — Abbey Wedgeworth

Abbey Wedgeworth writes this book as a woman who has walked through the sorrow of miscarriage herself. Using Psalm 139 she offers 31 daily reflections that remind the grieving woman that God sees her, knows her, and is actively caring for her even in this. She does not minimize the grief or offer easy comfort. She sits with you in it and keeps pointing you back to the God who holds you when you cannot hold yourself. One of the most recommended resources I have found for this specific kind of loss and one I would put in the hands of any woman walking this road.

Holding On to Hope — Nancy Guthrie

Nancy Guthrie lost two children — a daughter and a son — to a rare metabolic disorder. She writes from that place. This book offers the kind of companionship in grief that only someone who has actually been there can provide. She does not rush you through your sorrow and she does not offer tidy answers. She invites you to worship and trust God in your darkest days and somehow makes that feel possible. One of the most honest and faithful books on grief I have come across.

Hearing Jesus Speak Into Your Sorrow — Nancy Guthrie

A beautiful companion to Holding On to Hope. In this book Nancy Guthrie takes you through what Jesus actually said about sorrow and suffering — not as theological concepts but as words spoken directly into the places where you are hurting most. If you are in grief and need to hear the voice of Jesus in it, this is the book to reach for.

When God Weeps — Joni Eareckson Tada

Joni Eareckson Tada became a quadriplegic at eighteen years old and has spent decades walking with people through suffering. This book is her deep and scriptural exploration of why God allows suffering and what He is doing in it. She does not promise to remove your pain. She points you to the God who redeems it. Highly recommended by TGC and one of the most trusted voices on this subject.

Suffering Is Never for Nothing — Elisabeth Elliot

Elisabeth Elliot lost two husbands and raised a daughter alone in the jungle. She knew suffering in a way most of us never will. This book gathers her timeless insights on what suffering means and what God is doing through it. She does not sentimentalize it or spiritualize it away. She sits with the weight of it and points steadily to the God who is sovereign over all of it. A book worth reading slowly and returning to often.

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God — John Piper

A collection of messages from the Desiring God national conference that speaks directly to the hardest question grief asks — where is God in this and did He ordain it? Piper and his contributors do not sidestep the difficulty. They bring Scripture to bear on it with honesty and with hope. A theologically rich resource for the woman who needs more than comfort. She needs answers that hold. .

Healing After an Abortion — David Powlison

David Powlison writes about this topic with the same compassion and biblical clarity he brings to everything. This is a book for the woman who is carrying shame and grief and does not know where to bring it. Powlison does not minimize the weight of what has happened. He points steadily toward the grace that is bigger than it. Short, honest, and full of hope.
